Sea Urchin Silver Ring
Shell ring of the Sea Urchin Collection This collection is inspired by a very special place, the furthest north-east corner of Colombia, the Guajira peninsula… almost at the end of the world :) There I discovered this interesting creature for the first time, the "test" or shell of the sea urchin. I was immediately captivated by its structure full of symmetries, movement and nuances and wanted to work with it. Just some years later came the idea to transform this form into jewelry. To do that I had find first the very little ones.
Materials
925 Sterling silver
Finish: silver or oxidized silver
*This ring is also available in gold with a smaller sea urchin.
*For the blackened finish: the surface of this silver jewel is intentionally oxidized. It consists of a surface treatment (like a gold plating), which means that this coloring is only preserved for a certain period of time. In the case of jewelry that is not subject to heavy wear, such as earrings or pendants, the blackened surface remains visible for a very long time. This is because there is usually hardly any friction on the neck or ear. With arm jewelry, rings or wedding rings, this is different: here the blackened surface rubs off quickly as a result of daily wear -friction, bumping, scratching and the normal strain on the surface. In rings with a slight concave groove, where part of the silver surface is in a deeper position, these blackened surfaces are protected and last longer. This can create a nice contrast between the upper "lighter" and the deep "darker" areas and give a distinctive look. However, each piece can be easily and inexpensively restored to its original look by renewing the surface treatment. If you are interested in this process being renewed, please contact me.
Size
Sea Urchin diameter approx. 1,3 cm (approx. 0,5 in.) (the smaller ring on the third picture).
Process
After making a silicon-casting of a real sea urchin test, all sea urchins of this size are being casted from this one mould. The process is called "lost wax casting" so the final jewelry piece is made completely of sterling silver. All jewelry pieces are handmade in our atelier in Berlin. Each piece comes in a black CIRER jewelry box.

Patience and care are worthwhile when determining ring sizes.
We have therefore put together some tips for you on how to measure your sizes as reliably as possible.
Measuring with metal trial rings
As fingers react to temperatures and other factors and can change their condition over the course of the day, in our experience the most reliable way to determine sizes is with a set of metal (not plastic) trial rings (e.g. this one).
It is advisable to wear the rings in the morning and evening (possibly also at night) for a longer period of time. In this way, you can develop a feeling for the right size.
We recommend separating the individual rings from the band. This requires some force, but it is worth it when determining the size.
Please keep in mind that the width of your final (wedding) ring also influences the size that you need. Generally we can say: the wider the ring rail, the bigger the ring size (as the ring covers more of your finger).
Each sample-ring from this set is about 2 mm wide, so if the ring width is e.g. 5 mm, we recommend to rather take half to one size bigger for your wedding ring than the determined size from the trial rings.
When determining the ring size, please always use a ring and NOT something flexible to measure, as this can lead to major inaccuracies!
Flexible measuring tools such as plastic measuring tapes for the fingers are unfortunately not very precise. The measuring tapes are usually much wider than the (wedding) rings and do not simulate a realistic wearing experience. In addition, a flexible measuring tape does not have a perfectly round diameter, so incorrect ring sizes can be determined.
Measuring with a well-fitting ring
Determining the ring size from the inside diameter of a ring can be somewhat inaccurate, as a difference of 1 mm can make a difference of approx. 3 ring sizes (see table below).
We therefore recommend that you either measure very precisely with a caliper gauge (including tenths of a millimetre) or send us a suitable ring.
In this case, please make sure that the ring has a similar width and fits the finger on which you would like to wear your Cirer ring.
Measurement in a goldsmith's shop or at a jeweller's
You can also have the sizes measured at a goldsmith's or jeweller's (preferably with rings of a similar widths).
However, please bear in mind that this is usually only a snapshot and that fingers can change.
